Reset Button

Today was the first day of school for Jackson. To me, the first day of school is a chance for a reset. That said, every day is a chance for a reset but the first day of school really brings the opportunity to update your routine and make changes.

It's no secret that this was not the summer of fun that we'd hoped for way back in May. It kicked off with an amazing vacation and was followed by a fun June but July really did a number on us. Starting with the first day of July, someone was sick for over three weeks. We weren't dying and things could always be worse but it was really unfortunate for all of us.

And just as I was starting to feel better, I ran into George (dog) and broke two toes in three places. Again, if it's the worst thing that happens to us then we are really lucky people but it would have been great to finish summer strong with hikes and playing at the pool and running in the woods. Instead, mommy spent two weeks in a boot and is still taping two of the toes. It's hard to hike and chase children with broken toes.

We could never get a good routine this summer. The pieces and parts that made up our days just never seemed to fit well together. I can blame the natural chaos of life but things were just off this year. Now we have no choice but to have a routine and we have to stick to it.

Today was a new day. We were up early and there were no kid tears before departing for school. Jackson had a great day. Altman had a great day. I had a great day. I haven't seen Karson yet but he's pretty adaptable and I bet he had a great day.

I am truly excited for tomorrow.

So, in closing, take this reset opportunity and make the most of it. This is a great time to implement an evening family walk, family dinners, no technology zones, or whatever you've been looking to change. Do it today and then do it again tomorrow and the next day.

Hopefully I'll see you on the roads soon!

We've been experiencing marathon week in some shape or form for 20 years. Altman ran the full marathon the first year, and I ran the 5K....
